We’re delighted to share the performance output for Y5/Y6’s recent Samba project at LIPA Primary School. Through a series of in-class workshops and video tutorials, the children learned all about the Brazilian Carnival tradition, through the medium of drum and dance. Initially, our performance was scheduled to coincide with Liverpool’s Brasilica Carnival, but sadly it was postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The year groups were split so that the Year 5s took the lead on dance – learning all about the animals of the rainforest and mimicking their movements in ‘Hey Dumba’, a traditional Brazilian song about the way the of water in the Amazon rainforest. The children then learned ‘Samba Reggae’ which is a music style from Brazil, heavily influenced by the Reggae movement from Jamaica.

We’re delighted to have recently invested in enough authentic samba percussion for two classes to perform together – it is fantastic to see the Year 6s learning basic Samba rhythms on a variety of instruments including the agogo bells, caixas, repiniques, surdos & tamborims, performed in the Samba Reggae piece below:

The final performance was filmed outside the school in the Cathedral Gardens – we weren’t going to let a light drizzling of rain get in the way of the finished piece! We hope you enjoy the videos.
